Thaipusam

Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated by the Tamil community all over the world. These photos were taken in Mauritius. Thaipusam commemorates the Hindu god, Murugan’s triumph over evil. The devotees seek blessings from Murugan through ritualistic purification and mortification of the flesh. Piercings are made on the face and body as an act of penance and to prove their devotion and endurance. In their pilgrimage, devotees march bare feet to the temple carrying offerings. This festival lasts 10 days.
