West Indian Day Parade

West Indian Americans make up 4% of the total American population. These photos were taken on the West Indian Day Parade which is held in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY. This vibrant carnival attracts 1 to 3 million participants representing about 12 Caribbean island and mainland nations.

I was drawn to the Caribbean culture because of its varied heritage – African, Asian, European and American. I decided to create a photo project on the theme of the West Indian Day Parade because it is the most striking visual representation of its culture. Everything literally shines! Life is a celebration.
